Job Stories From Northfield, OH
Radon Mitigation In An Almost 200 Year Old Home

This customer had recently bought a home in need of some repair. The house was built in the mid 1800s and radon was important to the new owner for the safety of his family.

He had gotten another quote but wasn't quite happy with the amount of detail in the other bid. There was a fieldstone wall in the basement where an addition was put in and in order to get the radon levels as low as possible we wanted to suck from under that slab. The only way to do this was to go through the fieldstone wall, which other contractors were not willing to do. Luckily as we were looking, we found an opening that was already about 3 inches wide and took a very minimal amount of chiseling to finish off. The other large obstacle was going through the rim joist of the home to get outside. It was about a foot and a half of wood, with a solid beam in the middle. Though it was quite tough, we make sure that we have the right tools for instances like that.

Despite those two challenges, working on a 200 year old home wasn't all that bad! It had a nice cellar door entrance and it helped to further prepare us for future installs.

The levels came down from around 7.5 pCi/L, to around 2 pCi/L!
